The map
Geertruidenberg is one of the most recognisable small towns on a Dutch map. Its historic core is compact and almost round, enclosed by fortifications with pointed bastions and a moat that traces a star-like outline. Inside, streets lead to a long central market square. Outside the walls, the town opens onto the water and the low polders of North Brabant.
The town is among the oldest in the region and was strategically important on the rivers of the southern Netherlands, which is why it was fortified and besieged more than once. It lies on the Amer, near the Biesbosch wetlands. Across the water, the chimneys of the Amercentrale power station stand out. The municipality also includes Raamsdonksveer.
A Geertruidenberg map poster puts the fortress town at the centre, its bastions forming a crisp geometric edge. Water and polder around it provide space and contrast. The result is both historic and graphic, an old defensive plan that works well as design.

A long, open square runs through the historic centre. It's a clear void in the middle of the dense street pattern.
The Amer river and the flat polder landscape surround the town. Water channels and straight dike roads add clean lines around the fortress.
