The map
Glen Cove sits on the North Shore of Long Island in Nassau County, on the eastern side of Hempstead Harbor. Its downtown is compact, and from it streets wind out through hilly, wooded neighbourhoods toward the water. Glen Cove Creek cuts inland from the harbor, forming a narrow inlet with a marina and waterfront at its mouth.
The city was part of the Gold Coast, the stretch of Long Island where wealthy families built large country estates in the early twentieth century, and several survive as mansions, preserves and institutions set in extensive grounds. Garvies Point Preserve and Welwyn Preserve protect woodland along the shore, and the Webb Institute, a naval architecture college, occupies a former estate by the Sound.
A Glen Cove map poster reflects that mixture: a dense downtown core, curving residential roads, large green parcels where estates once stood, and an irregular coastline of coves and points. It is a varied composition, more organic than a suburban grid, and the harbor gives it a calm open edge.
The creek reaches inland from Hempstead Harbor toward downtown, a narrow waterway lined by the marina and waterfront that divides the city's southern side from its north.
Large wooded parcels mark former country estates, now preserves, schools and grounds, and appear on the map as broad quiet areas between the winding residential roads.
The coast bends through coves, beaches and points along Hempstead Harbor and the Sound, an irregular edge that frames the western side of the poster.
