The map

About this Göppingen map poster

Göppingen sits in the valley of the Fils, a river that flows west across the Swabian foreland toward the Neckar. From above, the town follows the water: housing, rail lines and the main road run beside the river along the valley floor, then thin out where the ground rises toward wooded hills and farmland to the north and south.

The centre has an orderly geometry that many older German towns lack. After a large fire in 1782, the old town was rebuilt on a regular plan, so the streets around the market square meet at near right angles. Beside that grid stands the Renaissance castle built for the dukes of Württemberg, a solid block that anchors the northern edge of the historic core.

North-east of town rises the Hohenstaufen, the hill that gave its name to the Staufer dynasty of medieval emperors. On a Göppingen map poster it shows as a quiet cone of contour-free space. Göppingen is also home to Märklin, the model railway maker founded here in 1859, which gives the tracks crossing the town a certain extra meaning.

01

The Fils valley

The river and the railway run side by side across the whole sheet, a long east-west corridor that organises the town and pulls every neighbourhood toward the valley floor.

02

Rebuilt grid centre

Following the 1782 fire, the old town was laid out again on a regular plan, and its straight, evenly spaced streets read clearly as a small rectangle of order at the heart of the map.

03

Towards the Hohenstaufen

To the north-east the streets give way to open ground climbing toward the Hohenstaufen, the hill of the Staufer emperors, where the map turns from dense lines to calm space.

Why Göppingen

A map that means something

For people who grew up in the Fils valley, the shape of Göppingen is easy to recognise: the river, the tracks, the neat centre and the hills beyond. It suits a hallway or a study, and makes a considered gift for someone who has moved away from Swabia.

You can add your own title, a subtitle such as a family name or a date, and the coordinates line. Choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, to suit the room it will hang in.
