The map
Gondola is in Manica province in central Mozambique, on the route that climbs from the port of Beira toward the western highlands. From above, the town is organised along a transport corridor. The main road and the railway run close together through the landscape, and the town's streets gather around them before giving way to farmland and scattered homesteads.
The centre is small and fairly compact. Its short streets meet the main road at intervals, and further out the tracks become lighter and irregular, spreading into fields, woodland and small settlements. The countryside around the town is gently hilly, so rural paths wind rather than run straight. On a map, this makes a clear contrast between the direct lines of the corridor and the loose network around it.
The Beira corridor links the coast with the interior of Mozambique and with Zimbabwe, and Gondola lies along this route not far from the provincial capital, Chimoio. A Gondola map poster shows the town the way it works: a place on the main road, with the countryside stretching away on both sides.

A small group of streets gathers close to the main road. It makes a dense spot in an otherwise open landscape.
Winding paths spread out through the farmland around the town. They fill the edges of the map with light, irregular lines.

Why Gondola
A map of Gondola is a personal reminder of a home, a family link or a time spent working in central Mozambique. Its simple structure along a transport route makes it an understated and meaningful piece.
