About this Goslar map poster
Goslar lies at the northern edge of the Harz mountains in Lower Saxony. On a map, the old town is a dense, rounded cluster of irregular streets that were once enclosed by walls. The medieval layout is still clearly visible, surrounded by later districts and green belts where the fortifications used to be. The small Gose river runs through the town.
Goslar's wealth came from the Rammelsberg, the mountain just south of the town, where silver, copper and lead were mined for about a thousand years. That wealth drew the Holy Roman Emperors, who built the Kaiserpfalz, an imperial palace, here. The old town, the Rammelsberg mine and the Upper Harz water management system are together a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
