About this Gyōda map poster
Gyōda lies on the low plain of northern Saitama, with the Tone River along its northern boundary. On a map, the old castle-town core forms a small, compact knot of streets. Around it lies wide farmland crossed by straight irrigation lines. Further out, suburban roads connect the city to neighbouring towns.
The most unusual feature is the Sakitama Kofun cluster south of the centre. It is a group of large keyhole-shaped burial mounds from the fifth and sixth centuries, now set in a park. Their moats and outlines are clear on a detailed map. An iron sword with an inscribed text was found in the Inariyama mound and is designated a national treasure.
Gyōda also grew around Oshi Castle, which is known for withstanding a flooding siege in 1590. The city later became Japan's leading producer of tabi socks. A Gyōda map poster shows the castle quarter, the burial mounds and the field patterns around them.
