About this Kōnosu map poster
Kōnosu is in central Saitama Prefecture, on the flat Kantō Plain northwest of Tokyo. The terrain is level, so the city's shape comes from its rivers, railway lines and fields. The Arakawa runs along the southwestern side of the city, and the map shows it as a broad band of floodplain between high embankments.
This stretch of the Arakawa is known for having the widest distance between river embankments in Japan, measuring over two and a half kilometres between Kōnosu and neighbouring Yoshimi. On a poster the space between the levees reads as a wide, open strip of fields and channels, very different from the tighter streets around it.
A Kōnosu map poster also shows the railway line and station area at the centre, with residential neighbourhoods and rice fields spreading outward. The city is known for traditional hina doll making and for flower growing, and the farmland at its edges is part of that picture.
