The map
Hermosillo is the capital of Sonora, set in the Sonoran Desert in the northwest of Mexico. It is known for some of the hottest summers of any large city in the country. The land around it is flat and dry, so the city has grown outward in a broad, orderly grid that stretches far in every direction.
In the middle of this plain rises the Cerro de la Campana, a rocky hill right next to the historic centre, with a road winding up to its summit. On a map it looks like a small island of contour lines surrounded by streets. The cathedral and the government buildings of the old core stand nearby.
To the east, the Abelardo L. Rodríguez dam holds back the Sonora River, whose bed, often dry, runs west past the city. Long boulevards, industrial parks and new subdivisions extend toward the edges. A Hermosillo map poster turns this desert geometry into a clean, even pattern of lines, anchored by one hill.
The hill beside downtown interrupts the regular grid, and the winding road to its top adds a small spiral of lines to the heart of the map.
The river channel crosses the city from east to west. It forms a broad corridor, dry for much of the year and lined with roads.
Neighbourhoods extend in long, even blocks across the plain, so the city spreads wide and its streets fade gradually into open desert.
