About this Nogales map poster
Nogales, Sonora, sits directly on the border with the United States, facing its smaller namesake in Arizona. The centre lies in a narrow valley between steep hills, so streets bend to follow the terrain and many neighbourhoods climb the slopes in terraces. The international boundary cuts across the top of the map as a single straight line, one of the most distinctive features any city plan can have.
The railway and the main highway both run through the valley toward Hermosillo and the rest of Mexico, and the city has long been one of the busiest land ports for goods moving between the two countries, including large volumes of fresh produce. Factories and maquiladoras occupy flatter ground along the southern approaches.
