The map
Hilversum lies in the Gooi region of North Holland, and unlike many Dutch towns it is not defined by canals or dikes. Instead, its map shows a town set on slightly higher, sandy ground, with curving streets, villa districts and large green areas. Heathland and woods surround it on several sides, giving the print soft, open edges.
The town is known as the centre of Dutch broadcasting, with many national radio and television organisations based at the Media Park on its northern side. Its town hall, designed by Willem Marinus Dudok and completed in 1931, is regarded as a landmark of modern architecture, and Dudok also shaped much of the town's planning.
A Hilversum map poster is a study in garden-city planning. Streets bend around parks and ponds, residential areas are loosely arranged, and the rail line through the centre provides a clear axis. In black and white, the contrast between built areas and heathland becomes the main feature of the design.
Large areas of heath and forest surround the town, appearing as broad open spaces with winding paths that frame the streets and soften the edges of the map.
Many residential neighbourhoods follow curving, planned streets with generous green spaces, a pattern shaped in part by Dudok's work as town architect.
On the northern side of the town, the broadcasting complex forms a distinct area of larger buildings and internal roads, set apart from the surrounding residential streets.
