The map
Hoboken lies on the right bank of the Scheldt just south of central Antwerp, and since the municipal mergers of 1983 it has been one of the city's districts. The river sweeps past its western edge, and the map shows how the district has always been shaped by the water, with industrial sites along the bank and housing spreading inland behind them.
Hoboken was long associated with shipbuilding, and its riverside yards launched vessels for much of the twentieth century. Metalworking left an equally lasting mark: a large refining and recycling plant for non-ferrous and precious metals still occupies a significant stretch of the district, visible on the map as broad industrial blocks between the streets and the river.
Inland, the plan is a dense mesh of terraced streets, squares and tram routes leading north toward the centre of Antwerp, broken by rail lines and a few parks. A Hoboken map poster captures a working river district with its own identity, distinct from the city it joined but closely stitched into it.
The broad river runs along the western side of the district, its wide sweep and flat banks forming the strongest line in the composition.
Former shipyards and large metalworks occupy the land nearest the water, appearing as open, blocky spaces that contrast with the fine grain of residential streets.
Rows of narrow houses along long straight streets fill the inland neighbourhoods, creating a tight, even texture typical of Flemish urban districts.

Why Hoboken
Hoboken is a place with strong local pride, home to families who worked the yards and plants and to newer residents drawn by the river and the city nearby. A map of the district honours both its industrial past and its everyday streets.
