About this Ilmenau map poster
Ilmenau lies at the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest, where the River Ilm leaves the hills. The town grew along the valley floor, and the map still shows it: the old centre sits compactly near the river, while newer districts spread along the flatter ground and climb only as far as the slopes allow. To the south and west, the streets stop abruptly where the forest begins.
Goethe knew the town well. He came here often on ducal business, and on the Kickelhahn, the hill above Ilmenau, he wrote the short poem known as Wandrers Nachtlied. Today the town is equally defined by its technical university, whose campus sits on the heights above the centre and forms its own distinct cluster of buildings and paths on the map.
