The map
Jauja lies in the northern part of the Mantaro Valley in Peru's central highlands, at an altitude of about 3,400 metres. It holds a special place in Peruvian history. In 1534 Francisco Pizarro designated it the first capital of Spanish Peru, before the capital was moved to Lima on the coast the following year.
The town keeps a clear colonial grid of straight streets and square blocks around its central plaza and cathedral. Beyond the grid, farmland spreads across the valley floor, and hills rise on either side. A short distance to the north-east lies Laguna de Paca, a lake popular with visitors from across the region.
A Jauja map poster captures that classic Spanish-American plan in the high Andes. The regular blocks create a calm, ordered texture, the plaza forms the obvious centre, and the lake and valley add softer shapes nearby. In Spanish, país de Jauja became an old expression for a land of plenty, which gives the town's name a gentle resonance.

The main square and its cathedral sit at the heart of the grid. It is the natural focal point of the map and of town life.
The lake north-east of town adds a smooth, open shape to the composition. It balances the geometry of the streets with a natural outline.
