The map
Kafr al Kurdī is in Dakahlia Governorate, in the northeastern Nile Delta. The land here is almost perfectly flat and has been farmed for thousands of years, so the map is shaped by water management more than by terrain. Irrigation canals and drains cut the countryside into long, narrow strips, and the town's streets pack tightly between them.
As in many delta settlements, the pattern is dense and organic, not planned. Lanes bend to follow old field boundaries and canal banks, and the built-up area thins into farmland without a sharp edge. The northern delta lagoons are not far off, and the wider area has the low, wet horizon typical of Egypt's Mediterranean fringe.
Since the town is modest in size and little documented in English, the map itself tells most of the story. A Kafr al Kurdī map poster shows how land and water interlock in the delta. Fine canal lines, tight urban clusters and the regular rhythm of agricultural plots give the print a graphic texture that suits a plain black and white layout.
Irrigation channels and drainage ditches run through the surrounding fields in near-parallel lines, making the strongest pattern on the map.
Streets in the centre are short and closely packed, and they follow old property lines instead of a grid, so the town looks like a solid dark mass on the page.
No hills interrupt the view. The land stays level all the way to the northern lagoons, which gives the whole composition a calm horizontal feel.

Why Kafr al Kurdī
For families from Dakahlia living in Cairo, the Gulf or further away, a map of the home town is a subtle reminder of where they come from. The canal pattern makes it look good on a wall even to people who have never been.
