The map

About this Kamigotō map poster

Kamigotō sits on Nakadōri Island in the northern Gotō archipelago, off the western coast of Nagasaki Prefecture. From above, the land looks torn into long fingers by the sea. Bays reach far inland, headlands fold back on themselves, and the settlements hold on to thin strips of flat ground at the water's edge. Most of the map is coastline.

Roads here follow the shore instead of crossing the hills. They wind around each cove, pass a harbour, and climb a saddle into the next inlet. Inland, the terrain rises steeply and stays mostly empty on the map. The streets form a few small clusters linked by long curving lines, which gives the island a loose, scattered rhythm.

The Gotō Islands are known for their Christian heritage. Communities practised their faith in secret for centuries, and several related sites in the region are now recognised by UNESCO. A Kamigotō map poster keeps this island geography simple: black water, pale land, and the fine thread of roads tying one harbour to the next.

01

Fractured coastline

Deep inlets and narrow peninsulas cut into Nakadōri Island from every side, so the edge between land and sea becomes the main drawing on the whole sheet.

02

Harbour settlements

Streets gather in compact clusters on the small patches of flat ground beside sheltered bays, and each one looks like its own miniature town on the map.

03

Shore-hugging roads

Instead of running straight across the hilly interior, the roads trace the coves in long loops, drawing a calligraphic line around the island.

Why Kamigotō

A map that means something

Kamigotō is a place people carry with them long after the ferry leaves, whether they grew up among the inlets or came to see the island churches. The map records a coastline that belongs to no one else, and it reads almost like an abstract drawing on the wall.

You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line to mark a family home, a journey or a date. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the HD files for $9 or order a printed poster on matte paper, with an optional wooden frame.
