About this Kanoya map poster
Kanoya is the largest city on the Ōsumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, on the eastern side of Kagoshima Bay. Much of its territory lies on raised plateaus of pale volcanic shirasu deposits, so the map shows a dense town in a river valley, with farmland and straight roads spreading over the flat uplands above and valleys cutting fine lines through them.
The city has a long connection with naval aviation. During the Second World War Kanoya was a major base for special attack flights, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force still operates an air base here, with a museum on its history. On a gentler note, the city is known for its large rose garden in Kirishimagaoka Park.
