The map
Kazincbarcika was created in the 1950s, when the villages of Sajókazinc and Barcika were merged and developed into a new industrial town in the Sajó valley of north-eastern Hungary. The map still shows that plan. Wide avenues, generous green spaces between blocks and large housing estates dominate, and the older village cores survive as small irregular clusters at the edges.
The Sajó river and the railway run along the valley, and the large chemical works that the town was built to serve lie beside them. Wooded hills rise on either side. In recent years Kazincbarcika has become known for turning its concrete blocks into canvases, with large murals painted as part of a street-art festival that reshaped the town's image.
A Kazincbarcika map poster makes the post-war planning easy to read: the long, orderly blocks, the open spaces between them, and the industrial belt along the valley floor. For anyone interested in twentieth-century urbanism, or anyone who grew up in these estates, the layout is striking.
Large blocks of flats stand in open green layouts along wide streets. From above they form a distinctive, regular pattern that reflects 1950s and 1960s town planning.
River, railway and main road run side by side through the valley, and together they form the town's long industrial spine.
The original settlements of Sajókazinc and Barcika appear as denser, irregular street clusters beside the geometry of the newer town.
