About this Kehl map poster
Kehl lies on the east bank of the Rhine in Baden-Württemberg, directly opposite Strasbourg. The river is the defining feature of the map, running as a wide band along the town's western edge, with the Kinzig joining it from the east. Harbour basins cut into the shore to the north, and the town's streets extend inland from the river toward suburbs and farmland.
For most of its history Kehl stood on a contested border, and the town was repeatedly damaged in conflicts between France and Germany. Today it is a symbol of the opposite. The Passerelle des Deux Rives, a footbridge opened in 2004, links the Garden of the Two Banks on both sides, and since 2017 Strasbourg's tram line has crossed the Rhine into Kehl.
