About this Krommenie map poster
Krommenie is part of the municipality of Zaanstad in North Holland, at the northwestern end of the built-up Zaan region. Like many settlements in this part of the Netherlands, its older streets follow dikes and waterways, with houses and workplaces strung out beside them and flat, reclaimed land opening out behind.
Around the town the polder landscape takes over: long rectangular fields separated by ditches, stretches of open water and nature areas nearby, and the straight lines of roads and rail. Krommenie has a notable industrial history, above all as a centre of linoleum manufacturing, which began here at the end of the nineteenth century and remains linked with the town's name.
