The map
Laiyang is a county-level city under Yantai in eastern Shandong, in the middle of the Jiaodong Peninsula. Its urban core is compact, with a fairly regular pattern of streets and a river running close by. Beyond it, the map opens out into farmland, villages and gentle hills rather than continuous suburbs.
The city is best known in China for the Laiyang pear, a local variety grown in orchards around the city for centuries and valued for its crisp, juicy fruit. On a wider crop, those farmed landscapes appear as a quiet field of small roads and scattered settlements surrounding the town.
Laiyang is also a notable site for dinosaur fossils. The hadrosaur Tsintaosaurus, known for a distinctive crest, was described from remains found here, and the area has produced other finds since. A Laiyang map poster shows a small city with a clear centre and a wide rural setting, a quieter subject than a big metropolis.
The main urban area is tight and legible, with streets arranged in a fairly regular grid. It fits comfortably within the frame and leaves room for the landscape around it.
A river runs near the city centre, with bridges and embankments lining its course. On the poster it adds a single curved line that breaks the grid's regularity.
Farmland and pear orchards surround the town, crossed by small roads and dotted with villages. At a wide crop they create a light, open texture around the dense core.
