The map
Yantai stretches along the north coast of the Shandong Peninsula, facing the Bohai Strait and the Yellow Sea. On the map the city forms a long band between the water and the hills behind it, with districts strung out east and west rather than packed around a single centre. The coastline alternates between sandy bays, small harbours and rocky points.
Just off the older part of the city, Zhifu Island is joined to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand, a well-known example of a tombolo on the Chinese coast. Nearby Yantai Hill, with its lighthouse and former consulate buildings, recalls the period after 1861 when the city, then known to foreign traders as Chefoo, opened as a treaty port.
The city is also closely linked with Chinese winemaking: the Changyu company was founded here in 1892, and vineyards spread across the surrounding countryside. A Yantai map poster gathers these elements into one frame, from the port and the old hill to the beaches and the newer districts growing along the shore.

A small headland beside the harbour with a lighthouse and nineteenth-century consular buildings, where the street pattern tightens around the slope before opening back onto the waterfront.
Roads that follow the shoreline for many kilometres, tracing each bay and beach, so the edge of the city reads as a long, softly curving line against the sea.
