The map

About this Lavradio map poster

Lavradio lies on the south bank of the Tagus estuary, in the municipality of Barreiro, across the water from Lisbon. From above, its streets run down toward a shoreline of mudflats, tidal inlets and old salt pans. The estuary takes up a large part of any map of the area and gives the town a wide, bright edge.

The Barreiro peninsula was one of Portugal's main industrial centres in the twentieth century, and Lavradio's neighbourhoods grew alongside factories and railways. Today the town is mostly residential, with a mix of older streets, mid-century housing blocks and newer developments, all within sight of the capital across the river.

A Lavradio map poster sets the town's dense street pattern against the open water of the Tagus. The irregular shoreline, the rail lines and the grid of housing make a balanced composition. It is a quiet south-bank view of a place many people know mainly from the ferry.

01

Estuary shore

Tidal flats and inlets form a complex, broken waterline along the Tagus. It contrasts sharply with the regular blocks inland.

02

Housing blocks

Mid-century apartment districts sit in orderly clusters. Seen from above, they show a more planned side of the town.

03

Rail corridor

Railway lines serving the Barreiro peninsula cut straight through the area, a reminder of its industrial and commuting past.
