Louvain-la-Neuve is one of the few new towns in Europe created around a university. When the University of Louvain split along language lines in the late 1960s, its French-speaking section moved to farmland in Walloon Brabant, and construction of the town began at the start of the 1970s. The result is a place designed from the outset for walking, study and daily life together.
On the map, the town centre is a dense knot of narrow lanes, small squares and stairways, inspired by older European towns but built on a concrete slab. Cars and the railway station run underneath, which is why the plan shows so few through roads in the middle. Ring roads circle the outside, feeding car parks at the edges.
Around the core, residential quarters and faculty buildings spread across gentle hills, with woods and fields close by, and an artificial lake adds a smooth open shape beside the housing districts.
