Mashtūl as Sūq is a town in Sharqia Governorate, on the eastern edge of the Nile Delta. The second part of its name, as-Sūq, means the market. It fits a place that has long served the farming villages around it. From above, the town appears as a compact, tightly packed core of narrow streets that thin out quickly into cultivated land.
The surrounding landscape is typical of the Delta: small rectangular fields, straight irrigation canals and rural roads that follow their banks. These waterways give the map most of its structure. They divide the farmland into long strips and guide where roads and newer neighbourhoods have grown. Roads connect the town with the larger centres of Sharqia and, further south, with Cairo.
