The map
Mbandjok is in Cameroon's Centre region, in the Sanaga River basin north-east of Yaoundé. From above, the town is a modest cluster of streets surrounded by large, regular blocks of cultivated land, and the geometry of agriculture dominates the landscape more than the town itself does.
The town is closely linked to sugar. Together with nearby Nkoteng, it hosts the cane plantations and processing of Cameroon's main sugar company, and much of local life has grown around that industry. Field boundaries, service tracks and irrigation lines give the surroundings a structured, almost gridded feel that is unusual in the region.
A Mbandjok map poster shows how a working landscape looks in outline. The residential streets are compact and slightly irregular, while the farmland beyond is laid out in long parcels. It is a map of a place defined by what it produces, drawn in simple black lines.
Large rectangular plots and straight service tracks around the town create a regular pattern that contrasts with the looser street layout of the settlement.
The town lies in the catchment of the Sanaga, Cameroon's longest river, and waterways and wetlands shape the wider landscape around it.
Homes, markets and roads gather into a small core, with routes leading out toward the plantations and to neighbouring towns in the Centre region.
