The map

About this Medenine map poster

Medenine is the capital of its governorate in southeastern Tunisia, set on a broad, arid plain between the Mediterranean coast and the Dahar hills. On the map, main roads arrive from several directions and meet near the centre, where the older part of town gathers into a tighter pattern before spreading outward into newer, more regular districts.

The town is best known for its ksour, fortified granaries built by the communities of the region, with stacked barrel-vaulted storage cells called ghorfas arranged around courtyards. Medenine once had a large ksar at its heart; part of it survives, and similar structures stand in villages and on hilltops across the surrounding countryside.

Beyond the built-up area, the landscape is open and sparse: tracks, dry riverbeds, olive plantations and scattered settlements. That emptiness gives the streets a strong outline on paper. A Medenine map poster shows a town defined by its role as a crossroads, where semi-nomadic communities once stored their harvests and where roads still lead to Djerba, Tataouine and the coast.

Converging main roads

Several main roads meet in the centre of Medenine, linking it with Gabes to the north, Djerba and Zarzis to the northeast and Tataouine to the south, giving the map a clear star shape.

02

The old ksar

Near the centre stand the remains of the town's ksar, a fortified granary of vaulted ghorfas once used by local communities to store grain and oil safely.

03

Open arid plain

Around the town, the land is flat and dry, with olive groves, tracks and wadis forming a light, sparse pattern that frames the denser streets at the centre.
