The map

About this Montmorency map poster

Montmorency lies in the Val-d'Oise, north of Paris, on a slope rising from the plain toward the forest that shares its name. On the map, streets curl and climb instead of running straight, following the hillside. The old centre gathers around the collegiate church of Saint-Martin, while residential streets spread down toward flatter ground and the neighbouring towns.

The town is closely tied to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who lived here in the late 1750s and wrote several of his major works during that time. His house is now a museum. Montmorency also gave its name to a sour cherry once grown widely on these slopes, a reminder of the orchards that covered the hillside before the suburbs arrived.

A Montmorency map poster captures the contrast between the tight, looping streets of the hill and the large, quiet mass of the Forêt de Montmorency to the north. The forest appears as open space crossed by a few paths and roads, and it frames the town like a margin on a page.

01

Hillside streets

Roads climb the slope in curves and bends. The pattern sets Montmorency apart from the flatter, straighter streets of the plain below.

02

Collegiate church quarter

The historic core around the Gothic collegiate church of Saint-Martin sits high on the hill, where the street pattern is at its densest and oldest.

03

Forest edge

The Forêt de Montmorency spreads north of town. It is a broad unbuilt area that gives the poster a calm, open border against the houses.

Why Montmorency

A map that means something

Montmorency appeals to readers of Rousseau, to families who have settled on the hill, and to anyone who likes a map with real topography in it. The winding streets and the forest's edge give the design movement without any added ornament.

Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the year you moved in, and keep or edit the coordinates line. The Paper and Sand styles suit the town's older character, and Noir sets the streets against a dark ground. It is available as a $9 download or as a printed poster.
