The map
Moulay Ali Cherif is the municipality better known as Rissani, in the Tafilalet oasis of south-eastern Morocco. From above, the town sits within a long band of palm groves and irrigated gardens, surrounded by open desert. Around it lie many ksour, fortified earthen villages whose compact, rectangular outlines appear across the map.
The area has deep historical significance. Nearby are the ruins of Sijilmasa, once a major terminus of the trans-Saharan caravan trade, and the region is regarded as the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty that still rules Morocco. The town takes its name from Moulay Ali Cherif, the dynasty's ancestor, whose mausoleum stands here.
A Moulay Ali Cherif map poster captures an extraordinary contrast: the dense network of paths and walled villages inside the oasis, and the emptiness of the desert beyond. It is a map of how people have lived with scarce water for centuries, and a fitting image for anyone who has travelled toward the dunes of Merzouga.
Fortified earthen villages dot the oasis, visible as compact rectangular clusters of lanes that give the map a distinctive, fortress-like texture.
A band of irrigated gardens and palms surrounds the town, crossed by narrow paths and channels that form a fine, dense pattern.
Beyond the oasis the map opens into empty desert, with only a few roads leading away, framing the settlement with dramatic space.
