Il-mappa
St. Anton am Arlberg sits at the western head of the Stanzertal in Tyrol, just below the Arlberg pass. On the map the village runs along the valley floor, with the Rosanna river, the main road and the railway all in parallel. The centre is a compact pedestrian street close to the lifts, and smaller hamlets such as St. Jakob extend the settlement further down the valley.
St. Anton is often described as a cradle of Alpine skiing. Hannes Schneider developed the Arlberg technique here in the early twentieth century and opened one of the first ski schools. For the 2001 Alpine World Ski Championships the railway was moved away from the centre, freeing space for the village to reorganise itself around the slopes.
A St. Anton am Arlberg map poster shows a village where transport lines and mountains leave little room for anything else: river, road and track squeezed together, a pedestrian core and lift stations, and open slopes rising north toward the Valluga. It is a fine study of how a mountain village fits itself into a valley.
The main street through the old village is car-free and runs close to the base of the lifts, forming the densest cluster of lines on the map.
The railway follows the valley toward the long Arlberg rail tunnel, its route rebuilt around 2000 to run along the valley side, away from the middle of the village.
Lifts climb north from the village into the Ski Arlberg area, which connects St. Anton with St. Christoph, Stuben, Zürs and Lech.
