About this Muroran map poster
Muroran lies on a peninsula on the southern coast of Hokkaido, curving around a deep natural harbour on Uchiura Bay. On the map, the city follows this hook of land, with the port and industrial areas along the sheltered inner shore and steep cliffs facing the open Pacific on the outer side.
The city grew as a centre of steel production and shipping, and large industrial sites still line the harbour. The Hakucho Bridge, a long suspension bridge, crosses the mouth of the port and links the two sides of the bay, shortening the route around the water.
