The campus
Nalanda Mahavihara was one of the great centres of Buddhist learning in ancient India, active from roughly the fifth century CE until the twelfth. Scholars travelled here from across Asia, including the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang in the seventh century. The excavated site in Bihar is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
On a map, the archaeological area shows as a compact zone of rectangular monastery foundations lined up along one side, with temple mounds opposite them. Around the site, the landscape is flat and agricultural, with small villages, ponds and rural roads. The hills around Rajgir rise to the south, beyond the plains.
A Nalanda Mahavihara map poster captures the geometric order of the ruins against the soft pattern of fields and water. It is a map of a place where learning was once organised on a remarkable scale. Printed in a minimal style, the rows of foundations read almost like an architectural drawing.

Large brick temples and stupas face the monasteries, forming a second line of structures across the site.
Fields, ponds and village roads surround the ruins, giving the map a quiet agricultural frame around the ancient centre.
