The map

About this Nay Pyi Taw map poster

Nay Pyi Taw was built in the early 2000s and became Myanmar's capital in 2006, and its map looks unlike any traditional city. Instead of a dense centre, it is made up of separate zones, ministries, hotels, residential areas and military districts, spread across a large area and linked by very wide roads. Open land and greenery fill the space between them.

The city is known for its multi-lane highways, including a broad avenue leading to the parliament complex, often remarked upon for how little traffic it carries. The Uppatasanti Pagoda, modelled on Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda, stands on a rise near the centre. Roundabouts and gardens mark the main junctions.

A Nay Pyi Taw map poster shows a planned capital drawn in wide, confident lines, with distinct clusters and long empty avenues. The composition is spacious and orderly, closer to a diagram than a traditional city map. It is one of the most unusual urban plans in Asia.
