The town canal
A straight channel runs south from the town through reeds and marsh to the lake. On the map it links Yawnghwe's streets directly with the open water.

The map
Yawnghwe, also written Nyaungshwe, is at the northern end of Inle Lake in Myanmar's Shan State. The town itself is small, a grid of short streets around a market and several monasteries. Its main feature is the canal that leads south out of town through reed beds and marshland to the open water of the lake. Every boat trip onto Inle starts on this channel.
The broader area on the map is a high valley that runs between parallel ranges of the Shan hills. Inle Lake is shallow and fringed with floating gardens and villages built on stilts. It is also known for fishermen who row standing up, with one leg wrapped around the oar. In the marshy land around the lake, narrow waterways do the job that streets do in other places.
A Yawnghwe map poster is mostly about the relationship between land and water. The town's small grid gives way to canals, and the canals open onto the lake, with long, steep slopes rising on either side. In monochrome, the floating gardens form fine parallel strips on the water. It is one of the rare places where the waterways say more about local life than the roads do.

A long, shallow lake to the south with villages on stilts and floating gardens along its edges. It fills the lower part of the print with calm, open space.
Ranges of the Shan hills rise on both sides of the lake. They frame the valley in a long north-south line.

Why Yawnghwe
Many people keep a map of Yawnghwe to remember a journey to Inle Lake: early boat rides on the canal, the stilt villages and the quiet water. It works as a travel keepsake, and just as well as a picture of home.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the dates of a trip. There are five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint makes the waterways look especially graphic.
