The map
Pyin Oo Lwin sits on a plateau in the hills east of Mandalay, high enough to be noticeably cooler than the plains below. Under British rule it was known as Maymyo and served as a summer retreat for the colonial administration. The layout still shows that: wide roads, generous plots and a looser, greener street pattern than a typical market town.
The National Kandawgyi Gardens are the best-known landmark, a large botanical garden laid out around a lake on the edge of town. In the centre stands a clock tower on the main road, and horse-drawn carriages are still associated with the town's streets. Around it the plateau is mostly farmland, including flower and coffee cultivation.
A Pyin Oo Lwin map poster shows a town planned with space in mind. The lake and garden paths form an organic shape on one side, while the centre has a simpler grid along its main roads. Printed in black and white, the contrast between the planned streets and the open land around them is clear and restful.
The botanical garden wraps around a winding lake, and its curving paths make one of the most distinctive shapes on the map, clearly different from the straight town roads.
Wide, tree-lined roads and large residential plots from the hill station period give the town an open, spacious street pattern compared with the plains below.
Farmland and wooded hills surround the town on its upland shelf, and the main road to Mandalay descends westward through the hills.
