The map

About this Yenangyaung map poster

Yenangyaung lies on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River in central Myanmar, in the dry zone where gullies and low ridges cut through the land. On a map the town stretches along the riverbank, its streets following the uneven terrain, while the broad channel of the Irrawaddy dominates the western side of the composition.

The name is usually translated as stream of stinking water, after the crude oil that seeped from the ground here. Hand-dug oil wells were worked for centuries, and later the fields became one of the country's main sources of petroleum. In 1942 the area was the scene of a major battle during the Second World War.

A Yenangyaung map poster shows a place shaped by its river and its oil: the wide Irrawaddy with its sandbanks, the town along the shore and a network of tracks leading inland to the oil fields. It is an unusual, spare image that says a lot about the history of industry in Myanmar.

01

Irrawaddy riverfront

The broad river and its shifting sandbanks run along the west side of the town, forming the largest shape on the map and its natural edge.

02

Oil field tracks

Inland, a web of narrow tracks leads across the hills to the well sites, a pattern shaped by generations of oil extraction.

03

Ravines and ridges

Dry gullies cut through the land around the town, and the roads curve to follow them, which gives the street pattern an irregular, organic outline.

Why Yenangyaung

A map that means something

Yenangyaung carries particular weight for oil workers and their families, for the Myanmar diaspora and for anyone interested in the Second World War in Burma. A map of the town keeps that story present in a restrained, graphic way.

You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a family name or an important year. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. A free 900 px watermarked preview lets you check the layout before you buy the HD files for $9.
