The map

About this Mandalay map poster

Mandalay is one of the most geometric cities in Asia. King Mindon founded it in 1857 as a new royal capital, and it was laid out around a vast square palace enclosure surrounded by a moat, each side about two kilometres long. The streets around it form a grid so regular that most are identified by numbers rather than names.

The city was the last royal capital of Burma before British annexation in 1885. The palace walls and moat remain the clearest single shape on the map. To the north-east rises Mandalay Hill, covered in pagodas and stairways, and to the west the Irrawaddy River flows broad and slow past the city's docks.

A Mandalay map poster shows the plan almost as it was drawn. The square of the palace sits in the middle, the grid extends evenly on all sides, and the river forms a soft, natural edge to the west. Few cities show the ideas behind their founding so plainly in their streets.

01

Palace moat

A square moat about two kilometres on each side encloses the former royal palace. It is the dominant shape of the city and visible at any scale.

02

Numbered grid

Streets run in a precise rectangular grid and are largely known by numbers, creating an even, repeating pattern across the whole centre.

03

Hill and river

Mandalay Hill rises at the north-east corner of the grid, while the wide Irrawaddy runs along the west, the two natural limits of the planned city.
