About this Nieuwegein map poster
Nieuwegein was created in 1971 by merging the old villages of Jutphaas and Vreeswijk, and the map still shows both layers. Winding cul-de-sacs and looping estates from the new-town era fill the space between older ribbons of settlement, which follow the waterways that first shaped this part of the province of Utrecht.
Water sets the edges. The Lek runs along the southern side, and the Merwedekanaal and the wider Amsterdam-Rhine Canal cut north to south through and beside the town. Near Vreeswijk, locks and harbour basins break the river edge into small, precise shapes, and they read clearly even at poster scale.
