Prokhladnyy is a town in the north of Kabardino-Balkaria in southern Russia, on the flat plain north of the Caucasus Mountains. It lies on the Malka River, and from above the town appears as a regular pattern of streets, with the river winding along its side and railway lines converging from several directions.
The town grew from a Cossack stanitsa and later developed into an important railway junction on the line through the North Caucasus.
