Rajshahi stretches east to west along the north bank of the Padma, the name the Ganges takes in Bangladesh. From above the city is long rather than round. The river forms its entire southern edge, shifting sandbanks and chars lie out in the channel, and the streets pack inland from an embankment that follows the water.
The city is known across Bangladesh for silk and for mangoes, which grow in large orchards in the surrounding region. Rajshahi also has a reputation for tidy streets and relatively clean air. It is home to a large public university and the Varendra Research Museum, one of the oldest museums in the country, which holds archaeological finds from the Bengal region.
