The map

About this Noordwijk-Binnen map poster

Noordwijk-Binnen is the inland historic heart of Noordwijk, in South Holland, set a little back from the North Sea behind a belt of dunes. The map shows a compact village centre around the old church. Narrow streets are lined with historic houses, and the land beyond is divided into long, straight flower-bulb fields that are typical of the Bollenstreek.

For centuries, Noordwijk was two places: the fishing settlement on the coast and the farming village inland. The seaside part grew into a resort, while Binnen kept its quieter village character and several monumental buildings. Every spring the fields around it bloom in bands of colour, one of the classic sights of the Dutch bulb region.

A Noordwijk-Binnen map poster contrasts the village's dense, slightly irregular centre with the geometric strips of field and ditch around it. The road toward Noordwijk aan Zee and the dunes adds depth to the western side. In black and white, the field pattern becomes a fine linear texture that is almost like a printmaker's hatching.

01

Historic village core

Old streets gather around the church at the centre. The compact, organic pattern stands out against the straight lines of the fields around it.

02

Bulb fields

Long rectangular plots, separated by narrow ditches, surround the village. From above they form a precise striped pattern, especially clear at larger print sizes.

03

Toward the dunes

To the west, roads lead through the dune belt to Noordwijk aan Zee and the beach. The dunes show as an irregular soft band between village and sea.
