About this Ōkawara map poster
Ōkawara is a town in the south of Miyagi Prefecture, spread along the Shiroishi River where the valley opens toward the Sendai plain. From above, the river is the organising line: the centre hugs its banks, the Tōhoku Main Line runs parallel nearby, and fields fill the flat land between scattered neighbourhoods.
The town is best known for Hitome Senbon Zakura, the long rows of cherry trees planted along the Shiroishi River embankment. In spring the trees line the water for kilometres, often with the snow-capped Zaō range visible in the distance. On a map that same embankment appears as a long, gentle curve of path and water.
