The map
Oosterhout lies in western North Brabant, just north of Breda. From above, the centre is organised around De Heuvel, an elongated square that serves as the heart of the town. The old streets run from it in several directions, and post-war residential districts spread around them in the curving, cul-de-sac patterns typical of Dutch planning.
Oosterhout is known for its religious communities. Several abbeys and monasteries stand in or near the town, including Benedictine communities that still live and work there. On the map they show as larger enclosed grounds with gardens. The town is also known for its slotjes, small historic manor houses and castles, some of which still have moats.
A Oosterhout map poster also shows the waterways around the town, including the Wilhelmina Canal to the south and the drainage lines of the polders further north. Together, the flat land, straight canals and small historic sites make up the typical landscape of western Brabant.

Monastery grounds with gardens and walls show as larger enclosed parcels among the residential streets, a reminder of the town's religious communities.
Small historic manor houses, some still surrounded by water, appear as small square moats that are clearly visible on a detailed map.
