About this Oroszlány map poster
Oroszlány, in Komárom-Esztergom County, was transformed in the 1950s from a village into a new socialist town built to house workers for the surrounding coal mines. The map still shows this double origin: an older village core with irregular streets, and beside it a planned district of long blocks, straight avenues and generous green space between housing estates.
The town lies at the foot of the Vértes, a low range of wooded hills whose slopes appear as open space beside the streets. Coal mining and a large power station shaped the local economy for decades. Both have since closed, but their traces remain in the road network and in the industrial areas on the edges of town.
Within the town's boundaries stands the Camaldolese hermitage at Majk, a baroque monastery where monks lived in separate small houses arranged in rows.
