The map

About this Ostrov map poster

Ostrov lies in the Karlovy Vary Region of western Bohemia, at the foot of the Ore Mountains. Its map has two distinct characters. The old town is a small, irregular cluster of streets around a square, next to a château complex and a formal palace garden. Beside it stands a much larger new town of broad, symmetrical streets and courtyard blocks.

That new town was built in the 1950s for workers in the nearby uranium mines around Jáchymov, and it is one of the country's clearest examples of socialist realist urban planning. It has axial avenues, a central square and uniform apartment blocks arranged around generous inner courtyards. The contrast with the older town is easy to see even at a glance.

An Ostrov map poster shows both layers side by side: the organic medieval core and garden on one side, the formal geometry of the planned town on the other. It appeals to residents and to people interested in architecture and planning. It is also a good choice for anyone who has travelled through the spa country around Karlovy Vary.

01

Château and garden

The château complex and its palace garden form a green, formally structured space beside the old town, one of the most distinctive areas on the map.

02

1950s new town

Wide, symmetrical streets and large courtyard blocks built for uranium miners give much of Ostrov a strong, planned geometry that prints with striking clarity.

03

Old town core

A small cluster of irregular streets around the old square marks the historic centre, a fine counterpoint to the straight lines of the later development.

Why Ostrov

A map that means something

This map suits anyone who values urban history. A single frame shows two different ideas of a town, one medieval and one planned, and the design stays interesting long after it goes up on the wall.

Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint works particularly well with the planned streets. Download the HD files for $9 or order a printed poster.
