The map

About this Phra Khanong map poster

Phra Khanong is a district in eastern Bangkok, along the Sukhumvit corridor. From above, the pattern is layered. Sukhumvit Road and the elevated BTS line above it cross the area in a firm straight line, while the Khlong Phra Khanong canal curves through the district toward the Chao Phraya. Between them runs a mesh of narrow sois, the side lanes that branch off Sukhumvit.

The canal is older than the road network and was once the main way to travel here, when the district was largely orchards and rice fields. Many sois still end at the water or bend to follow it. Today the area mixes old shophouses, markets, apartment towers and newer condominiums, and the map shows a dense, uneven texture of streets.

A Phra Khanong map poster shows the district's two sides: the canal and old lanes, and the modern rail and road axis. The area is also known across Thailand for the ghost story of Mae Nak Phra Khanong, told in many films. For residents and former residents of this corner of Bangkok, the map is easy to recognise.

01

Khlong Phra Khanong

The old canal winds through the district. On the poster it adds a soft, flowing line through the dense urban pattern and recalls the area's waterborne past.

02

Sukhumvit axis

Sukhumvit Road and the elevated BTS line cut straight across the map. That line is the district's main modern artery and anchors the composition.

03

The sois

Narrow side lanes branch off Sukhumvit in a comb-like pattern. They give the drawing its fine, repeated texture and show how the district grew.
