The map
Phra Nakhon is the historic heart of Bangkok. It covers Rattanakosin Island, the land King Rama I chose for his new capital in 1782. From above, its boundaries are unmistakable. The Chao Phraya River curves along the west, and canals dug as defensive moats close the district off to the east. The result is a city within a city, shaped by water on every side.
Inside, the map is full of large royal and religious compounds. The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew occupy a walled precinct by the river, with Wat Pho just to the south. The open oval of Sanam Luang lies beside them. Ratchadamnoen Avenue, a broad ceremonial boulevard, runs east past the Democracy Monument, and backpacker streets such as Khao San Road sit only a few blocks away.
A Phra Nakhon map poster shows that layered plan clearly. Large rectangular temple and palace grounds sit next to fine shophouse lanes, and the river and canal loops hold it all together. It is a map of Bangkok's beginnings, and it has more ceremony and structure than the sprawling city around it.

Canals cut in the late eighteenth century mark the old city limits. Together with the Chao Phraya they turn Rattanakosin into an island that is easy to see on the map.
This wide royal avenue runs from the palace area eastwards past the Democracy Monument. It is a straight, formal line through the otherwise tight grain of the old town.

Why Phra Nakhon
For anyone who has walked between temples in the heat, taken a river ferry or stayed near Khao San, Phra Nakhon is the part of Bangkok that stays in the memory. The map's clear edges and monumental blocks make it one of the strongest city designs.
Add a personal title, a subtitle with the dates of your trip, and a coordinates line. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir works especially well with the river's curve.
