The map

About this Rapperswil map poster

Rapperswil lies on the northern shore of Lake Zurich in the canton of St. Gallen, now part of the merged municipality of Rapperswil-Jona. The old town occupies a small peninsula pushing into the lake. From above, its tight medieval streets fill the point, with the castle on the high ground at the tip.

East of the old town, the Seedamm causeway crosses the lake to Hurden, dividing Lake Zurich from the Obersee. Beside it runs a long wooden footbridge, a reconstruction of a historic pilgrim route and one of the longest wooden bridges in Switzerland. Rapperswil is also known as a town of roses, with several rose gardens.

A Rapperswil map poster is dominated by water. Lake Zurich on one side, the Obersee on the other and the straight line of the causeway between them. The small, dense old town at the centre gives the whole composition a clear focal point.

01

Old town peninsula

The medieval town fills a small point projecting into the lake, with the castle on its high end. It is a compact, clearly bounded core.

02

Seedamm and footbridge

The causeway and the long wooden bridge cross the lake toward Hurden, two straight lines that split Lake Zurich from the Obersee.

03

Lakeshore

Long stretches of shoreline curve east and west from the town, giving the map broad, calm areas of water on two sides.
