The map
Roi Et lies on the flat plain of Isan, Thailand's northeast, and its map is organised around water. At the centre is Bueng Phlan Chai, a large, almost rectangular lake with an island in the middle, surrounded by parks and streets. The town spreads out from there in a mostly regular grid. Traces of old moats and earthworks around the historic core can still be seen in the street pattern.
The street layout is straightforward. Long roads lead out toward the rest of the province, and neighbourhoods fill the space between them. Temples and school grounds appear as open parcels. Around the town, the land is rice fields and villages, which shows up on the map as a thin network of roads with lots of empty space in between.
The name Roi Et means one hundred and one. It is often explained by an old story about the town's many gates or dependent towns. Nearby, a tall standing Buddha at Wat Burapha rises above the centre. A Roi Et map poster places the lake at the centre of the composition, with the regular town wrapped around it.
The central lake, with its island, sits at the heart of the town. On the poster it forms a strong, clean shape surrounded by streets and parkland.
Traces of the historic moats and earthworks remain around the old centre. They create curved edges in an otherwise regular grid.
Straight roads cross the flat farmland around the town. They reach toward the edges of the map with long, light lines.
