Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni stands on the east bank of the Maroni River in western French Guiana. The river is wide enough here that Suriname, on the far bank, appears on the map as a separate world. The town itself is laid out in a regular colonial grid of straight streets running inland from the waterfront. Around it, the grid dissolves into forest and newer, looser neighbourhoods.
The town was founded in the 19th century as the arrival point for convicts sent to the French penal colony. The Camp de la Transportation, where prisoners were processed, still stands near the river. It is now a heritage site that recalls the town's origins. The orderly street plan, drawn up by the colonial administration, reflects that same period.
