About this Sankt Gallen map poster
Sankt Gallen lies in north-eastern Switzerland, in a narrow valley at around 670 metres above sea level, between Lake Constance and the hills of Appenzell. The city stretches for several kilometres from west to east along the valley floor, and its neighbourhoods climb the slopes on both sides. From above it looks like a long ribbon of streets held between two green ridges.
At its centre is the Abbey of Saint Gall, which grew up where the Irish monk Gallus settled in the seventh century. The abbey precinct, with its cathedral and famous library, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around it the old town forms a compact, largely pedestrian network of lanes. It is known for its carved oriel windows and for a textile trade that made the city famous for embroidery.
Above the city, the Drei Weieren sit on the southern slope. These three historic ponds once supplied water to the textile bleaching works.
